BOB SCHNEIDER – SAN FRANCISCO (2/21/10)

There is nothing like Bob Schneider live at Saxon Pub in Austin. It’s like jamming with him in his living room. He’s a Texas treasure, but when Bob hits the road, the rest of the country shines brighter. On this late February evening, however,┬áit poured like a Peruvian rain forest in San Francisco. Bob suggested on stage that he could have made a killing at the merch table by selling FAYM umbrellas. Mother Nature may have deserved the middle finger on this night. But all the wet souls that had gathered at The Independent were about to spin dry to some ass shaking music.

During the two hour set that featured tracks from his latest album, Lovely Creatures, plus a great mix of classics, Schneider shifted from acoustic guitar to keyboards, trumpet and harmonica. He sang, scatted and rapped while dropping wisdom bombs on our heads. Actually some of his lyrics don’t make a whole lot of sense – they just sound good. Regardless, Bob Schneider puts on one of the greatest live shows around. He’s 100% the definition of a music man, and his band belongs on every All-Star team that’s ever been created… Billy Cassis (guitar, vocals), Conrad Chouchroun (drums, steel drums, xylophone, vocals), Harmoni Kelley (bass, vocals), Oliver Steck (accordion, trumpet, baritone horn, pocket flute, recorder, harmonica, vocals). Sorry – those musicians are so good that I had to mention them all.

San Francisco received a consensus 7 out of 10 for its sing-a-long efforts. Although we only earned a C on our vocal exam, I must admit, the chorus of his fans mixed nicely in this intimate setting. A cascade of tarantulas reverberated off the cement floor and shook the beer glasses stacked on the bar. Bob and his crew, once again, brought the gold in the sunset. And the beauty of a Bob show is that you can relive it for the rest of your life thanks to his Frunk CDs (live recordings from each live gig).
