STP @ SXSW

After a nine year break – Stone Temple Pilots has the engine fully greased again! The band shifted straight into fifth gear, kicking off its spring tour last night to a raucous Austin Music Hall crowd at SXSW. Scott Weiland and the boys revved it up with a little “Vasoline” right out of the gate. The STP classic was the perfect lube for this much anticipated musical orgy.

“Wicked Garden” then sprouted into two new cuts from their forthcoming, self-titled album. The songs are very personal to the band, especially to Weiland, who has endured some highly-publicized problems over the last decade. In addition to the messages, STP is also bringing the melody on this new disc… one that continues to add to its catalog of anthems.

The Austin audience was also treated to a chorus of classics: “Big Empty,” “Sour Girl,” “Creep,” and “Plush.” A dapper Weiland drove his fans into a frenzy on “Interstate Love Song,” as gigantic video screens behind him took everyone on a tranquil trip through a desolate desert. Throughout the 90 minute set, Weiland danced and delivered, even grabbing a megaphone to emphasize this band’s rightful place amongst rock music’s elite.

“Core” closed out the official set, and while the band exited, the crowd began chanting and begging for more. STP obliged. For its encoure, Weiland brought out legendary Doors’ guitarist Robbie Krieger for an epic performance of “Roadhouse Blues.” The exclamation point on the evening was dotted by the unforgettable rifts to “Trippin’ on a Hole in a Paper Heart.” The whole place knew every word, and they made sure that the band knew it, too.

Buckle your seat belts! This new chapter of STP is already off to one hell of a ride.

(A profile article on Stone Temple Pilots will be coming soon).
